FBI warns of malware targeting banking applications .. How to protect yourself?

The FBI expects that the increased use of mobile banking applications during the current stay at home will lead to an increase in cyber attacks that use a variety of technologies including: application-based banking Trojans, and fake banking applications.

Some cyber attacks deceive users into installing fake banking apps, masking their behavior of data theft with misleading “error” messages that allow the app to bypass your phone’s security and incorrect login information, as the FBI says: “Nearly 65,000 fake apps were discovered in 2018 alone ”

Banking trojans such as Anubis and EventBot have been used to steal thousands of accounts in over 200 phone banking applications, as hackers constantly develop these fake apps to make them appear more persuasive to users.

Here's how to avoid malware attacks for banking apps:

- Download your banking apps from trusted sources, or from your bank’s website directly, and report fake applications that you find in the Apple and Google app stores.

Do not click on links or open email attachments and messages of unknown origin.

- Activate the 2FA two-factor authentication feature in your bank account (and all your important accounts), and make sure that you are using a stronger technology to get login codes - like a code that can be created on the phone - instead of a text message arriving to your phone.

- Never share two-factor authentication codes, as your bank will not call you or text you to request this information.

- Be careful about sharing personal information if your bank contacts you, there is a big difference between confirming the information they already have and submitting this information to someone when asked.

- If you are not sure of the person you are talking to when the "bank" calls you to inquire about something, tell the person from the other party that you will hang up and then call the bank again directly.

- Create strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts, and you can do this by using a password management app.
