Google wants to bring Android games to your Mac

Google plans to bring Android apps and games to Mac and Windows in the coming years, according to recently announced internal documents as a result of an ongoing lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games.

The search giant is famous for initiating multiple projects to accomplish more or less the same task. This practice extends to gaming.

As part of a project dubbed Games Future, the company wants to make high-quality games available across all screens.

The internal documents reveal what appears to be a Google presentation outlining its Games Future roadmap from now to 2025. The immediate goal is to bring select Android games to PC, with cross-platform support.

Later, the company plans to significantly increase the list of Android games available on desktop computers, and expand support for macOS.

It also plans to create a gaming network that offers live streaming, rewards, and the ability to connect with friends.

One of the documents reveals the company's plan to provide the most out of any platform. It also hints at a low-cost universal portable game controller, which provides access to Android games anywhere - even via smart TVs.

Games Future's secret internal presentation is dated October 2020 and was produced by the Google Play division.

The service is expected to work alongside Stadia, Google's platform for streaming PC games to any device.

In addition to taking a revised or unspecified percentage of the profitable $35-50 billion industry, it wants to avoid a mobile downturn.

The vision is to provide the best platform for creating, discovering and experiencing games. And the company wants it to be where developers publish their games. In return, it makes these games available across all its platforms and devices.

The company provides full developer services to the game industry. This includes cloud services that facilitate hosting large tournaments, and payment solutions such as crowdfunding.

And the company wants to aggregate games across providers, including game streaming, so you can always find games through Google and third parties.

This is not much different from Google TV and what the Google Play Store does by linking to different streaming services where you can find a movie.

One of the models shows a default menu for PUBG via Google Play that includes links to the Android app and Stadia.

There are ways to run Android apps and games on your Mac and PC. But the experience isn't perfect in most cases, and a lot of popular games don't work when you try to play them in an emulator.

And the search giant wants to fix that so that one day Android users can access their favorite versions anywhere.

It has brought Android apps to Chrome OS. But the company is planning a major expansion that will support other platforms.

Some of the information in the slides has been revised, and the company has not yet made Future Games or any component of it official. But some references, such as those for Android 12, indicate that this is a very much alive project.
