Netflix adds support for spatial audio on iPhone

Netflix has confirmed that it is now rolling out support for Spatial Audio to its iPhone and iPad apps.

This provides an immersive experience using directional audio filters, and a company spokesperson confirmed that it has begun rolling out support for the feature across iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 14.

The toggle button for spatial audio management is located in the Control Center. And the spatial audio feature is exclusive to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

Apple says spatial audio is an immersive experience using directional audio filters to play sounds almost anywhere in space, creating an immersive audio experience.

This places the surrounding channels in exactly the right place, even when you turn your head or move your device.

Here's how Apple describes spatial audio for AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users: Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking brings the cinema experience straight to AirPods Pro.

By applying directional audio filters and tuning the frequencies received by each ear, Spatial Audio can position sounds almost anywhere in space, creating an immersive surround sound experience.

Using the gyroscope and accelerometer on AirPods Pro and iPhone, spatial audio tracks the movement of your head and device, comparing movement data, and then resets the sound field so that it remains attached to your device even while your head is moving.

iOS 15 takes spatial audio to the next level with a new Spatialize Stereo option, which simulates the spatial audio experience for non-Dolby Atmos content.

Depending on the content you're watching, in the Volume Control Center you have either the spatial audio indicator active. or indicator for conversion to spatial stereo.

The interface also assures that, in the first case, the audio track is being played in multiple channels. While in the other case it is played in the form of normal stereo.

Movies that are very old, or not updated, are processed using iOS 15 forced conversion mode. If you're using iOS 14 you won't notice any difference.

Others benefit from spatial sound. This allows AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users to listen to almost any song or video.

And if you don't see the spatial sound in the Netflix app. Make sure you have the latest version of the App Store and keep checking over the coming weeks.
