Dell announces its first portable monitor

Dell has announced a 14-inch USB-C portable monitor priced at $349.99, and it goes global on August 31.

It has a 1080p LED-backlit IPS panel with a 60Hz refresh rate and 6ms response time. And you can use it as a secondary screen for your USB-C laptop.

The screen, which the company refers to as the C1422H, has narrow bezels and a minimalist design that looks like it was taken from an XPS laptop.

It also features a built-in stand that tilts between 10 and 90 degrees. The portable monitor weighs less than 0.9kg. And its peak brightness can reach 300 nits.

There is a USB-C port on each side of the base, and both can receive and pass power. They can also handle video feed via DisplayPort 1.2 alt mode.

You can operate it by connecting the monitor to your laptop or other device using the included USB-C cable. The screen draws power from the laptop while the two are connected.

And if you want to keep your device charged while it's attached to the display, you can connect your device's USB-C power adapter to the other USB-C port at the base of the display to cross-charge.

However, this portable monitor likely won't be able to pass the full amount of power the laptop needs to recharge quickly.

The company said the portable monitor has up to 65 watts of pass-through power for systems that use 90 watts or greater of a USB-C power source. For chargers of 65 watts or more, the monitor passes 45 watts to your system.

The portable monitor is a new project for the company. But the company set a high price for the first model, despite the presence of several alternatives with similar specifications that cost much less.

Asus' larger 15.6-inch IPS portable monitor costs $200 on Amazon. While a similar monitor from AOC costs just over $100.

Dell's model closely mirrors Lenovo's $246 14-inch portable monitor, which has a nearly identical stand.

Notably, the company doesn't promise to improve color accuracy or other subtle details like a faster refresh rate.

On the other hand, this monitor comes with a protective cover and in addition to a three-year advanced replacement service, the company will send you a new monitor the next day if you encounter a defect for the three-year limited warranty period.

In addition, the screen has a beautiful design and slim bezels on both sides.
